Saturday afternoon, a logistical need was identified that involved a round-trip drive to Dallas on Sunday. Having an SUV with three rows of seating, a love for long drives, and fresh music to put the Bose system through its paces all lent themselves nicely to this task.
The timing of it put me on the road at 6:00 a.m. and led to an excellent discovery. Okay, perhaps reminder is a better term for it.
Climbing the upslope of one of the ubiquitous flyover lanes, so common in Texas road systems, I caught sight of something that had honestly eluded me for the past year.
The full moon, descending toward the Western horizon, in shades of burnt orange and partially shrouded in tattered, hazy clouds.
I’m guessing you’ve seen the photos I used to post with regularity… You know, without doubt, that this brought a smile to my face.
As the angles closed off, my travels continuing, this unfortunately gave way to the “other reminder.”
As much as I thoroughly enjoyed that brief glimpse, the immediacy with which it was lost to intervening power lines, the intrusion of billboards, and the inevitable descent of the flyover lane back to ground level served to highlight the fact that in Texas, at least in and around any of the populated areas, there may be references to nature but the reality is something quite different.
I don’t recall where I first saw it, but somewhere I caught a quote that sums up the mentality around us. Forgive me if I butcher it, but perhaps my subconscious continues to throw dirt on the idea in an attempt to bury it even as I type.
“We name the development after what we tore out to make room for it.”
I’ve gotten out of the habit of keeping the better camera with me, as the opportunities to put it to good use don’t present themselves often, these days.
That said, there is a need for me to make a trip back up to Washington State in the next few weeks. Rest assured that the camera, and the fly fishing gear, will be making that trip!
Tight lines…
