So…remember when I briefly pondered the idea of a high-viz version of a Renegade, in the post where I first tried tying them?
Remember, also, how I mentioned on another occasion that I just can’t leave some things on that mental “to-do list?”
I know…”What the heck is that?” This was a fun little departure, and an opportunity to make something that I will hopefully be trying out, in the next few days.
Start tying the Renegade pattern, then … get sidetracked.
Holographic tinsel on the hook bend, just like the Renegade (although I bent strand over the thread, and tied it using both loose ends, together, to add some durability).
Rear hackle, just like the Renegade.
Peacock herl, just like the Renegade, although not going quite as far forward.
After that, it’s like a Frankenstein fly, with a traditional Parachute front half grafted on instead of the old front hackle. Light olive dry fly dubbing, Antron yarn post, and thick wraps of hackle on that post.
I suspect I will find that the lack of balance, front to back, in the wrapping of the hackle will make it float “tail high”, but if that turns out to be the case, I will thin out the lower half of the rear hackle fibers, a bit at a time, until it floats closer to level.
Might be WAY off, and have no fish at all show interest in it, but you never know. If it catches fish, I might give it a permanent name, all to itself. For now…Franknegade? Renestein?
Tight lines.
Update – Fished it for 2.5 hours, today! Not great in the pools and still water, but once you get into choppy water, pockets, etc, it takes trout like a champ! In the rough head of a pool, I caught three 7-8″ Cutts, on three consecutive casts!
